Both AWS and Azure can run essentially the same workloads: virtual machines, databases, storage, container platforms. Feature-for-feature, the two platforms are closer than either vendor’s marketing suggests. The decision that actually matters for most small and mid-sized businesses comes down to three things: what you already run, what your team already knows, and where your data needs to sit.
Your existing Microsoft footprint
If your business already runs Microsoft 365, Entra ID and on-premises Active Directory, Azure has a practical edge that has nothing to do with raw platform capability. Identity, licensing and management tooling are already shared between Azure and the Microsoft 365 stack, so a business already invested in that ecosystem generally sees a faster, cheaper migration and fewer integration headaches with Azure than with AWS.
Businesses with no existing Microsoft dependency, or workloads built around AWS-native services, don’t have that same advantage, and the calculation shifts.
What your team actually knows
Platform capability on paper doesn’t matter if nobody in your business (or your IT provider) can operate it confidently. AWS has a larger global market share and a huge amount of freely available training material, which matters for businesses hiring in-house cloud engineers. Azure’s strength is that its skills overlap heavily with the Windows Server and Microsoft 365 administration skills most SMB IT teams already have.
For a business without a dedicated cloud team, this is often the deciding factor. Running a platform your provider only half-knows is a slower, more expensive, and riskier way to operate than running the one they know well.
Cost isn’t a simple comparison
Both platforms use consumption-based pricing, and both are genuinely hard to estimate without doing the work. Reserved instances, spot pricing, data egress fees and storage tiers all shift the real-world cost in ways that rarely match the sticker price. Azure Hybrid Benefit can meaningfully reduce cost for businesses with existing Windows Server and SQL Server licences, which is a factor AWS pricing doesn’t have an equivalent for.
The only reliable way to compare cost is to model your actual workloads, not a generic calculator, because the gap between the two platforms is almost always workload-specific.
Compliance and data residency
Both platforms have Australian data centre regions, so residency requirements can generally be met on either. Where they differ is compliance tooling and documentation depth for specific frameworks. Businesses in regulated industries should check which platform has published compliance mapping for their specific obligations, rather than assuming coverage.
The practical answer
For most SMBs already running Microsoft 365 and Windows-based infrastructure, Azure is usually the lower-friction, lower-cost path, purely because of what’s already in place. For businesses building greenfield, containerised or AWS-native workloads with in-house engineering capability, AWS remains a genuinely strong choice. Neither platform is objectively “better.” The right one is the one that fits the infrastructure, skills and workloads you already have, not the one with the better marketing that week.
